Launch of the high-level panel of legal experts on media freedom enforcement report on providing safe refuge to journalists at risk
Journalists are facing increasingly overt and serious threats to their safety and liberty, sometimes leaving them with no choice but to seek safe refuge abroad while those threats subsist. Presently, however, most journalists in this position are unable to move to safety in time because the pathways open to them are too few in number and those that do exist are too slow, burdensome, or difficult to navigate. While today NGOs provide the lion’s share of assistance to journalists in their quest for safety, there is only so much that they can do. It is States that ultimately hold the keys to safe refuge for journalists at risk. Therefore, States that believe protecting journalists and championing their work constitutes a vital pillar of a free society, need to act.

Join members of the High-Level Panel of Legal Experts on Media Freedom and their guests at the launch of the Panel’s enforcement report entitled, Providing Safe Refuge to Journalists at Risk. The eminent panel of speakers, including report author, English barrister and Member of the High Level Panel, Professor Can Yeginsu, together with Ms. Amal Clooney, Lord Neuberger and Baroness Kennedy, will discuss a set of specific recommendations that States can implement to provide safe, reliable, and effective relocation pathways for journalists at risk.
